International prices of jewellery components like gold, platinum and diamonds are based on the American Dollar (USD or $). With the exception of diamonds, all metals are traded as stocks on the open market. Various stock exchanges display live dollar prices per ounce at which a particular metal is currently trading.

Over and above daily metal indicators the price of diamonds fluctuates as well. Unlike metals, diamonds are not openly traded commodity but rather are priced according to the Rapaport tables. Because in both cases prices are indicated in USD ($) they must be converted to the local currency of any particular country, in South Africa to a South African Rand (ZAR or R). Daily exchange rate must therefore be also considered when pricing jewellery.
